The Amman Opera Festival
(AOF)
Under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Muna Al Hussein, Jordanian soprano Zeina Barhoum launched the first opera festival in the Arab world, the Amman Opera Festival (AOF), with the full operatic production of Verdi's La Traviata at the 2000-year old Roman Amphitheater in July 2017, alongside over 150 International musicians and dancers from more than 10 countries.

Barhoum is preparing to present a performance of Opera La Bohème during the 2nd edition of the Amman Opera Festival in the first week of September 2018. Zeina as Mimi, the Opera La boheme’s leading role, will be accompanied by Bassem Al Khoury from Syria as Rodolfo for one of the evenings with the full opera cast from different parts of the world, featuring local talent. They will be accompanied by The Torre Del Lago Orchestra and a choir from Georgia, in cooperation with the festival’s artistic director and conductor, Lorenzo Tazzieri, featuring musicians and choir singers from Jordan including a children’s choir.

The 2nd AOF will be opened with a Gala concert at Al Hussein Cultural Centre in the heart of the old downtown of Amman followed by a reception. The AOF will also feature a symposium, titled ‘’An Eye on Music in Education”, featuring lecturers and inspirational speakers from the local community and abroad. The symposium will announce the results from the various workshops carried out in 2017 and that will be carried out in 2018 with schools in Jordan and abroad. The aspiration for the official launch of this programme in 2018 is to grant a student a scholarship to study abroad.

Zeina launched the Amman Opera Festival to plant the seeds towards growing the opera culture in Jordan and the Arab world, and perhaps inspire the building of a purpose-built Opera House in Jordan's Capital, Amman, joining the company of other Arab states such as Oman and the UAE.
